Liberals applauds Obama’s ‘standup-level funny’ response to Cheesecake-gate and Trump’s overreaction
‘They mobilized a whole-of-government response to that joke! Not to inflation, but to that joke,’ Obama remarked about the Trump administration’s response to his joke
Liberal pundits lauded former President Barack Obama’s response to Republicans’ “phony outrage” over his joke comparing President Donald Trump’s White House decor to the Cheesecake Factory.
Obama mocked Trump’s extensive White House renovations while rallying for Democrats in Ohio Saturday, telling the crowd he has the Executive Mansion “looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.” The remark was met with outrage from the MAGA world, with Trump later blasting Obama as “stupid,” and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent bizarrely hosting a press conference outside a Washington, D.C., Cheesecake Factory.
Obama continued the bit Wednesday at a rally for Democratic candidates in Atlanta, Georgia, and mocked Trump for taking greater offense to the Cheesecake Factory comparison than to the former Iraqi dictator.
“The president wasn’t even mad about the Saddam Hussein comparison,” Obama said. “That part didn’t bother him. But he was upset about the Cheesecake Factory comments.”
That led to a slew of leftist support for the former president with one X user stating: “Getting under that orange skin must be so satisfying for Obama.”
Obama continued to double down on the gag during his Wednesday Georgia rally, telling the crowd: “They mobilized a whole-of-government response to that joke! Not to inflation, but to that joke.”
“The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury! This is the man who is in charge of the economy, the person who’s supposed to be figuring out how to make your life more affordable, the guy who’s supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation and reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory!”
Obama’s response to Republicans’ outrage over the whole ordeal had left-leaning critics of the president in bits.
The former president’s speechwriter, Jon Favreau, joked in response: “Would anyone else on the right like to keep this going for another few days or no?”
Obama’s former National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor praised the “Pitch perfect response from Obama to this manufactured Cheesecake Factory outrage.”
Arizona Democratic Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari simply wrote, “God he’s good.”
Other Democrats also lauded the former president’s witty “standup-level funny” response to Trump.
“Remember what having a President felt like?” one X user joked.
Another noted, “Obama knows how to play Trump and MAGA like a f****** fiddle dude.”
The Cheesecake Factory, a casual dining chain known for its decadent desserts and oversized menu, was bizarrely thrust into the political spotlight over the weekend, with less than a week until midterm elections. The new hot topic comes as Trump and the Republican Party have struggled to convince Americans that he is successfully managing pocketbook concerns.
While MAGA fumed over Obama’s dig, claiming the remark was snobbish while trying to depict Democrats as being out-of-touch with average Americans. However, Democrat finger pointing came as Trump joked that his own supporters could barely afford a meal at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
During a midterm rally in Texas, Trump discussed places Americans could spend their $5,000 “Trump dividend” — which he promised to send out if Republicans maintain control of Congress.
“You could even come to Mar-a-Lago, I said it the other night,” he said. “The problem is that for $5,000, the most you'll be able to buy is a hamburger and maybe a small dessert. I'm not even sure you could buy that. No, don’t go there, that's not a good place if you’re price conscious.”
Online commentators also noted the irony, with social media users noting, “Making fun of the decor at Cheesecake Factory was elitist...Bragging that the crowd wouldn’t be able to afford the food at his private club is, what exactly?”
Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Palm Beach resort, reportedly has a membership fee of $1 million.
Trump’s comments come as polling shows Democrats are forecasted to gain seats in Congress come Election Day, and as affordability remains a key concern for most Americans.
According to an AP-NORC poll released this month, just 17 percent of Americans approve of the president’s handling of the cost of living, while just 26 percent approve of his handling of the economy. In a YouGov poll released last month, a plurality of respondents, 47 percent, described Trump as out of touch.
